Rare lightning strike leaves Russell County couple shocked but thankful for safety

Unexpected lightning struck home during severe thunderstorm warning:

On June 14, as part of a storm complex that extended across Columbus and neighboring cities, a series of severe thunderstorms unleashed 1,200 lightning strikes in just one hour. Amidst the chaos and ominous weather conditions, a Russell County couple found themselves experiencing an incredibly rare and frightening event.

 

The couple recounted the rare experience of being struck by lightning twice in their home:

Stephanie Culberson, a Russell County resident, is no stranger to inclement weather. However, despite its familiarity, nothing could have prepared her for the shocking and terrifying moment ahead. During an average Wednesday night, Stephanie was caught by a deafening boom that pierced through the air. The intensity was so tremendous that it physically hurt his ears. Instinctively, he tossed his laptop aside, seeking refuge, just as his 109-pound German Shepherd jumped into his lap. In that moment, Stephanie had a sinking feeling: Their house had been struck by lightning.

Interestingly, this was not the first lightning scare that Culberson had encountered. In a strange twist of fate, his previous home located in Russell County was also struck by lightning in 2017. Stephanie's husband, Corey Culberson, reflected on the true nature of experiencing such an extraordinary event twice in his life. Lightning strikes are fairly rare, and getting hit twice lowers the odds, causing them to grapple with a mix of emotions.

 

Aside from the material loss, the couple found a ray of hope in health and perspective:

The past 24 hours have been tumultuous for the Culberson family as they deal with the aftermath of the lightning strike. Forced to leave their home, they have taken shelter in a nearby hotel. In the midst of chaos and uncertainties, the couple remains steadfast in their positive outlook.

Corey stressed that despite the damage to their property, they are incredibly grateful that they were not harmed.
